Food and Wine
Serbia has become the food capital of Eastern Europe with numerous restaurants in which a gourmand visitor will never be disappointed having the offer of varied dishes – from traditional home-made cuisine to the international one.
Serbian cuisine, as a heterogeneous one actually derived from mixed cuisines of the peoples who have ever lived in these areas. Local specialties are prepared with organically grown ingredients among which the most authentic ones are: KAJMAK – (clotted cream), CEVAPCICI as well as the other barbecue specialties.
Good food requires good drinks too and Serbian food goes best with good home-made wines, beers and excellent home-made brandies. Therefore Serbia abounds with different kinds of red and white wines (over 700). It is known that the cultivation of grapes in Serbia goes back to the Roman period and nowadays some eight wine regions could be found within the country. Some Serbian well-known wines are from Sremski Karlovci (especially “Bermet”); then from Vrsac (the buttery of “Vrsacki vinogradi” which is one of three largest in Europe); from the town of Smederevo (wine “Smederevka”), as well as from the famous cellars of Eastern Serbia (town Negotin) or from lake Palic in the North which are also known as “wines from the sand”.
